Fibroids Q&A

What are fibroids?

Fibroids are noncancerous tumors that grow in the uterus. Made of muscle and connective tissue, fibroids are a common gynecological condition, affecting 40% to 80% of women of childbearing age.

The reason for the wide variation is that many women don’t know they have fibroids. They may come and go before Dr. Yu finds them during your annual well-woman exam.

These growths vary in size and number, and most are asymptomatic. However, when fibroids grow large, they may cause pelvic pain or heavy bleeding during your period.

Fibroids may grow inside the uterus, in the wall of the uterus, or on the outside wall of the uterus.

What are some of the symptoms of fibroids?

Most people with fibroids have small fibroids and no symptoms. However, if you have large fibroids, you may experience:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Heavy and painful periods
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Urinary urgency
  • Constipation
  • Low back pain
  • Increased abdominal distention

Though rare, fibroids may cause problems with fertility, making it hard to get pregnant.

How are fibroids diagnosed?

Dr. Yu conducts a thorough exam when you come in with concerns about pelvic pain or heavy menstrual bleeding to diagnose the cause of your symptoms. He reviews your concerns, medical history, and gynecological history and performs a physical and pelvic exam.

Dr. Yu may feel your fibroid during your pelvic exam and then do an in-office ultrasound to confirm your diagnosis. The location and size of your fibroid help direct treatment, and Dr. Yu may recommend an MRI to get these details.

What are the treatments for fibroids?

Treatment for fibroids depends on the size of the benign tumor and your symptoms. If you have asymptomatic fibroids, Dr. Yu may only monitor your growth and provide treatments if they cause problems.

If your fibroids cause symptoms, Dr. Yu may recommend hormonal birth control or uterine artery embolization. Uterine artery embolization is a new treatment for fibroids that uses heat energy to shrink the tumor. Most people respond well to these noninvasive treatments.

If Dr. Yu’s noninvasive treatments fail to improve your symptoms, he may perform a myomectomy (surgical removal of the fibroid) or hysterectomy (surgical removal of your uterus).
